Why it works: You can't hold anyone accountable to numbers you can't see. Every state has a public records law that gives you the right to request budgets, contracts, audits, and emails. These laws are separate from the federal FOIA and each state sets its own rules and deadlines.
- Ask for the adopted budget, the most recent audit, and any contract or line item you have questions about.
- Put it in writing. A written request starts the legal clock and creates a paper trail.
- Be specific about what you want and the date range, vague requests get delayed.
